Each of us can define "new" for ourselves, but my definition of new, for the purpose of this thread, is music that you recently heard for the first time. It would also be music that was recorded by that musician in the past year or two. Recently is within the past month or two.
Hmmm. Probably one of my favorite songs I've first heard in the past month or two is "Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T's, though actually it's a couple years old. Been feeling quite fond of several songs by Lily Allen recently.

The one song of Lily Allen that I heard was "Smile" but its words and music seemed to me to be in conflict with each other. I liked the music, but the lyrics sounded like she was insulting the listener. Instead of paying for that song, I could always arrange to get insulted for free if I was looking for insults.
She's actually insulting an ex-boyfriend who treated her badly, if you listen to the whole thing. But alot of her songs have a very sweet melody with edgier lyrics, and that incongruity is one of the things I especially like about her music.
When you first left me I was wanting more
But you were fucking that girl next door.
What'd you do that for?
When you first left me I didn't know what to say
I'd never been on my own that way
Just sat by myself all day
I was so lost.
Back then but with a little help from my friends
I found the light in the tunnel at the end
Now you're calling me up on the phone
So you can have a little whine and a moan
And it's only because you're feeling alone.
At first when I see you cry
Yea, it makes me smile
Yea, it makes me smile
At worst I feel bad for awhile.
But then I just smile
I go ahead and smile.
Whenever you see me
You say that you want me back
And I tell you it don't mean Jack
No, it don't mean Jack.
I couldn't stop laughing
No, I just couldn't help myself
See you messed up my mental health.
I was quite unwell I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found the light in the tunnel at the end
Now you're calling me up on the phone
So you can have a little whine and a moan
And its only because you're feeling alone.
At first when I see you cry
Yea, it makes me smile
Yea, it makes me smile.
At worst I feel bad for awhile,
But then I just smile, I go ahead and smile.
Well Im an AOR kind of guy and I dont even think in terms of single songs. I also never ever listen to the radio or watch music videos. So its not all that often that I even know about an album within 2 months of its release unless its one I had been waiting for in advance. "The Best Damn Thing" by Avril Lavigne was released on April 17 2007 which is close but not within the last two months. However "The Best Damn Thing Deluxe Edition" by Avril Lavigne was released on Jun 26 2007. There are some tracks that I like a lot on that one. Judgeing by the music it is hard for me to narrow it down to less than 3 really.
I dont really care about lyrics much. They arent very important to me. If a song happens to have good lyrics that I can relate to I guess it can sometimes add a little something to it. So if I were forced to narrow it down to a single song, which goes against my grain, there are two that I can relate to the lyrics but I guess one more than the other. So if I were forced the best I could really do honestly would be list 2 but I guess I could list them in order of preference with regards to the lyrics.
These arent the only tracks on it that I like. I also should mention that I like her other 2 albums better and it has been within the last two months that I first heard them (because I didnt think I would like any of them) but its been longer then 2 months since they were released. I generally like stuff thats a lot heavier but having a tempo that is fast enough to prevent me from falling asleep works for me even if its not real heavy.

I have a little different take on those lyrics. I dont think I would consider, at least by what is actually said, that he treated her badly or that shes necassarily saying he treated her badly. Just that it hurt her. To me treating her badly would be not leaving her and fucking the next door neighbor but telling her he wasnt fucking the next door neighbor and that shes just a crazy jealous bitch for thinking he was and then dumping her at some point later on possibly but not necassarily when hes fucking around on the next door neighbor with a 3rd chick.
I also dont think, based on what is actually said in the song, that she is necassarily insulting him. She is feeling just a little bit bad (but not much) for the fact that she is taking delight in his suffering and enjoying being in the position to reject him now because he rejected her before. But not insulting him just in case she changes her mind but she wont unless he hooks up with another chick and then she might.
They're gonna clean up your looks With all the lies in the books To make a citizen out of you Because they sleep with a gun And keep an eye on you, son So they can watch all the things you do
Because the drugs never work They're gonna give you a smirk 'Cause they got methods of keeping you clean They're gonna rip up your heads, Your aspirations to shreds Another cog in the murder machine
They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me They could care less as long as someone'll bleed So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose Maybe they'll leave you alone, but not me
The boys and girls in the clique The awful names that they stick You're never gonna fit in much, kid But if you're troubled and hurt What you got under your shirt Will make them pay for the things that they did
They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me They could care less as long as someone'll bleed So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose Maybe they'll leave you alone, but not me
Ohhh yeah!
They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me They could care less as long as someone'll bleed So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose Maybe they'll leave you alone, but not me
All together now!
Teenagers scare the living shit out of me They could care less as long as someone'll bleed So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose Maybe they'll leave you alone, but not me [x2]
.....are more my cup of tea. But even the songs I dont like I still appreciate because they are just a good solid band. They do what they do very well. There arent that many good solid bands who sell as many records as they do.
I wanted to mention a song I've been totally loving for several months now: "Lost My Music" by Aya Hirano. It's a J-pop song that was featured in an episode of the anime "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya," and it totally rocks.
This summer I've heard a song a few times on the radio, but I didn't catch the name of it or the artist. Finally this morning I did some searching and figured out it's "Mister Man" by Mastah E. It's an amusing song, but hard to find. There isn't an album out or anything. So I paid 99 cents to download it.
Now hold on man it was stated at the top of the thread that only out of music less than 2 months old. So now even Avril Lavigne is too old to count. Exactly what do you think is the best stuff less than 2 months since its been released? Nobody ever asked me what I think of all time. I mean I wouldnt say Slayer. I dont really like them. Although I really like the song "At Dawn They Sleep" from their second album. I dont have a problem with the genere. I do think the Satan thing is stupid but I dont have a problem with it. I just cant stand their lead guitar being out of key. It bugs the fuck out of me. They probably do it on purpose and not out of incompetance but it still bugs the fuck out of me. Their drummer is pretty fucking good. They play good rythem and what they play is difficult to do but I hate their lead. I like Venom a lot better. Technically Slayer is as good or better than Venom but Mantis plays his solos in key. Also I can sing Venom songs in the shower. But Venom isnt one of my favorites either.
Its easy to not like Dave Mustain personally, although I do, but its hard to not like Megadeths music. I dont care who you are if you say you dont like a single Megadeth song you are either a liar or you havent heard much of their shit. The vocals arent that great but everything else is top notch. Anthrax arent the best lead players around but nobody can play rythem any better then they do. Rythem guitar is an underapprecieted thing. There are a lot more really good lead players then there are really good rythem players. Not that many of the best lead players play really heavy shit anyway. Maybe at first but not after a while.

No, Ken wrote:

He says that, for the purposes of this discussion, we can each define "new" for ourselves -- but that HIS definition of "recent" for HIMSELF is two months.
So, another person might define "recent" as, say, anything within the past 6 months, or even the past year, or whatever they wish.
Well then I will define it as within the last 30 years. And there is no way I could narrow that down any farther than about 250 songs by about 40 bands and Im sure even then I would accidentally leave something out. But some of the bands (the ones I can think of right now anyway) would be :
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass Motorhead Anthrax Megadeth Iron Maiden Gang of Four The Dead Kennedies Black Sabbath Every band Ritchie Blackmore ever played with MSG James Brown Gogol Bordello Rollins Band Robin Trower Saxon Jerry Lee Lewis Thin Lizzy The Fuck Ups Gold Shit and the Kingboys Boss Tweed Axis Nightmare
Oh boy.. this will sound so cruel, but I can't say I've been thrilled by anything new in terms of music and I mostly go back to my CD collection. Music has become so formatted for the most part, though thankfully, we still have artists like Ani DiFrance, Tori Amos and Bjork, to name only those, which push some boundaries.
Now, there are many things I've liked or enjoyed, but maybe it's being a musician and spotting the influence right away, and having songs people think are so "out there" sounding somewhat familiar to me, but it's hard to actually thrill me. Dr. Dre's The Chronic managed, as did Fear of a Black Planet by Public Enemy, and then, Helmet blew my mind with Meantime, but these are not in any way recent.
I mean, I feel disconnected to some extent. I worked in a youth home when Nevermind by Nirvana was released, with all the young pre-teens coming in to play it for me, "Like Frank, you gotta listen to this, it's like, so refreshing and new-sounding." I sat there feeling like "The Pixies really need to sue those guys for ripping off Surfer Rosa and those are Michael Stipe's lyrics aren't they?"
I miss it, sometimes. The excitement of being one of the first few to get into U2, which back then, was really something different. Catching the single to this little known Australian band which got big thanks to Beds Are Burning, though I felt Midnight Oil's Truganini on the following album was not only better but simply the most brilliant pop song ever to find its way onto an album. Being in attendance to a Bad Brains concert where they literally played for 10 people, or the early days of The Police, knowing REM before they went to Warners, the Eurythmics if anyone remembers them and whose classic was absolutely desecrated by Marilyn Manson with a rendition so poor its beyond torture. I'll be honest, forced to vote for best song these days, I'd go the Corrosion of Confirmity path, Vote With A Bullet, and blow my own brains out.
