Saw a video for a song called "Come Monday Night" by God Help the Girl. I put their CD on my wishlist at Amazon, because the band is awesome.
But I suppose there's plenty of other stuff I'm into lately that I haven't mentioned. There's Petra Haden, who does music for Prius
commercials, including a really great cover of "Let Your Love Flow." I also put her CD on my wishlist recently, as well as downloading an mp3 of that
song from Toyota's website. Um, "Boom Boom Pow" by Black Eyed Peas is quite good, of course. I've gotten into the band Tiny Masters of Today.
Downloaded their song "Cell phone" and added a couple of their CDs to my wishlist, after seeing a video for their song "Pop Chart." Hmmm,
I'm looking at my list of mp3s to remind myself of anything. There's "Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop" by Landon Pigg, which you'll
recognize from an AT&T commercial. "Furr" by Blitzen Trapper. "The Honey Tree" by Mostar Diving Club, from another car commercial (the
best place to hear new music these days seems to be in commercials, especially for cars). And in case I haven't mentioned it before, I'm also quite
fond of Dawn Landes' bluegrass cover of the Peter Bjorn and John song "Young Folks."
Oh, I think they are both great. Lady GaGa is obviously very adventurous....but she does produce a nice dance groove... Katy is just too cute... I can't
even begin to think of a reason I wouldn't like her....
They're both a bit risque for my tastes. Same reason I can't stand the Pussycat Dolls, and people like that. I can be quite a prude. Except when it
comes to anime girls, of course.
(Oddly, I always liked the Spice Girls.)
I can see that...particularly with Lady GaGa...she's a bit out there. Even my daughter uses a naughty word to describe her. I think Katie Perry is pretty
innocuous. You might try ignoring "I kissed a girl" and check out her other stuff. I harbor warm fuzzies for her because she never appears in
heels...at least, every time I've seen her she's been in very comfortable, healthy looking flats...I appreciate that message being sent. The Vegas song
is all about waking up covered in glitter....nothing more scandalous. (and. really..."I kissed a girl" is just about a bit of an experiment...she
hopes her boyfriend doesn't mind {which, I'm so sure he won't!})
Oh, I have always had the feeling that any guy who would go out with someone like her wouldn't mind her kissing a girl. In fact I suspect he'd like to
watch. And I have nothing against experimentation, I just think the time for that is not when you're already in a relationship. Also, some of the
lyrics make it sound like she doesn't have the remotest concern for the feelings of the girl she kissed. Maybe the girl doesn't care, either, but who
knows? For that matter, if she doesn't know her boyfriend won't mind, but just "hopes" it... clearly, she doesn't really care about
either person, only herself.
I understand what you are saying. Katy is obviously very superficial. I just don't find that a huge negative when it comes to "favorite song"...I
mean, I remember running home for lunch from elementary school (because kids who lived close and had parental permission could do that) and calling the radio
station to request they play "Sugar Sugar" by "The Archies"....It really doesn't get more superficial than that....
Alot of my problems with entertainment these days is how much of it is about sex, and often clearly without anything resembling love. I can sometimes enjoy
such things, I mean a song is just a song, and it's possible for me to find some songs cool even if I dislike the lyrical content. But most songs
like that just don't do it for me. It just bugs me how... I mean, forget sex. I enjoy much more chaste stuff like "I Want to Hold Your Hand," for
example, but I wouldn't want to even hold a girl's hand unless we were madly in love. So it bugs me that so many people these days have no qualms about
having sex purely for the sake of sex. And the entertainment industry reflects that. And reminds me how different I am from everyone else, which makes me feel
so much more alone. Even among friends, good, normal people, who I basically like, their attitudes are vastly different from mine. And it hurts, knowing
I'm so different. And music just multiplies that by like a thousand.
So yeah, I'm glad there are some modern songs that are much sweeter. Love songs can hurt me, because they remind me how alone I am, but I still much
prefer them, if they're done well, like "Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop" or "The Way I Am" (Ingrid Michaelson, I don't think I
mentioned that song here before) or "Bruises" or "Young Folks" or "Come On Get Higher" (Matt Nathanson, I might've neglected
to mention that one, too.) Even if a song includes a bit of a physical aspect, it's okay as long as it's basically a sweet song and I feel like the
subject is genuinely in love with the object. But in spite of being hurt by some sweet songs, I still love to listen to them because I... just love them,
I'm in love with the idea of real love, and it's nice to know there are others out there who feel the same. (Though I'm sure most such people are
still far more experienced than I, and have far fewer reservations.)

Listening to the lyrics is a sure fire way to get irked at a song. Unfortunately, I think the current trend in music is very graphic sexual references with
little or know actual relationship. Perhaps the reason Katy Perry doesn't bother me much is that at least she doesn't seem to condemn and abhor the
people in her life. A lot of what's on the radio now is really very mean and offensive. I got very unpopular a couple of years ago when I raised a ruckus
about the lyrical content of the Soulja Boy song. The kids just wanted to do the fun dance, they didn't want to know that the song was all about
mistreating a woman right after having very anonymous sex with her (I got it banned at the middle school, much to my daughter's horror).
It's hard to imagine anyone not recognizing Soulja Boy as offensive, but I know plenty of people just like it because it's fun. (I said somewhere that
I'd be shocked if it didn't end up as a KidzBop song.) But of course, there are some things that are less obviously offensive, and some things I can
even vaguely like... I really enjoy the sound of Mambo No. 5, but I hate the lyrics, even though it's far from graphic. And hell, the Dave Matthews Band
song "Crash" sounds very sweet, but there are some lyrics in it that I can't believe get played on the radio, though I'm not at all surprised
if no one notices.
The kids would do the Soulja Boy dance at cheer events....little 5 and 6 year old girls. Once, we were at the local rec center and there was a "daddy and
daughter" dance class and wouldn't you know it, there were all these men doing the Soulja Boy dance with their little daughters...at that point it was
particulcarly nauseating. Even my daughter was appalled.
